Recover a dead battery

If the engine will not crank, safe recovery comes before a parasitic-draw investigation. Record whether lights are dim, terminals are loose, the battery was recently charged, or a jump was needed. Stop for a damaged, leaking, frozen or swollen battery and follow the vehicle recovery instructions.

What to record first

  1. Separate an immediate no-start from a battery that repeatedly loses charge.
  2. Use the vehicle-specific charging or jump-start procedure.
  3. After recovery, assess battery health and the charging system before testing parked draw.

Keep your readings together in the parasitic draw calculator, or compare a different symptom in the complete guide directory.

Car Clicks And Will Not Start

If your car clicks and will not start, a weak battery or poor connection is possible, but the sound alone cannot confirm a battery fault.

Start A Car After Battery Drain

To start a car after battery drain, inspect the battery and choose the charging or starting-assistance method permitted by the vehicle manual.
